Lego Lab, the platform where Lego tests out new ideas and gathers feedback for potential future products, has unveiled a new Lego Mindstorms Porsche set. It’s sort of a “concept set” right now, but if you live in the UK you can enter a competition to receive one of five of these to test it out and provide feedback. The deadline is today, though, so if you live in the UK and want one, I’d enter soon.

Lego says the Mindstorms Porsche features
Advanced Computing visor sensor providing full autonomous driving
WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity
Ultra-sonic sensor to detect objects and measure distance
LEGO smart hub with 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis gyro sensor
Programmable LED headlights
7.3v Lithium ion battery USB charging port
This is not something I ever expected Lego to make, but it’s definitely interesting. Information about pricing and availability (other than just the fact that five random people will get one) is currently unavailable because Lego is still experimenting with this idea. But I’m hoping they do give it a more widespread release, because this looks interesting! What do you think?

This is how it starts. In 10 years we will be riding in self driving LEGO mobiles.

Remove the “self-driving” part and I’m 110% in. Easily customizable and buildable cars? Yes and please!

Who needs self-driving?

I, for one, welcome our Lego overlords.

I’m not really familiar with pricing on the Minstorms sets. Any ideas, $300-400 sound about right?

That sounds about right. The new Mindstorms system released this year costs $359.99. Of course, we have no idea how much the Porsche will cost when/if it comes out, but we do know it’s based on the Lego Technic Porsche 911 RSR set that came out last year, and it uses the same (or mostly the same) electrical components as the new Mindstorms system. Also, the new Mindstorms system allows you to control things with a PS4 or Xbox controller, so you could theoretically program this thing to be controlled like it’s in a racing game :P

I’m more interested in the fact that the new Mindstorms system allows you to control this with an Xbox or PS4 controller. I’m hoping some video game developer will program it to drive like a car in a video game :p

Wonder if it has a speaker to make Vroom Vroom sounds with.

So do the sets that are missing pieces cost more?

Not sure what you mean.

Yes, yes it does.

Was supposed to be a bad joke about Porsche charging more for lighter ,”track-ready” versions of their models.

Oh. I really “whooshed” there...
